Yoga for Recovery

Addiction creates a dissociated state whereby the individual is disconnected from others as well as themselves — and their own body. The addicted mind dwells only on itself. It feels cravings or withdrawal and prioritizes the instant gratification of substance abuse. It lacks empathy and thereby lacks the ability to care about the consequences of its decisions. It becomes separated from the world around it, trapped in an internal cycle that becomes increasingly difficult to break.

In recovery, reconnecting the mind to the body and reality is essential. Therapies geared toward mental and physical healing help you release yourself from these unhealthy behavior patterns and reestablish long-term and outward thinking processes. With holistic therapies that engage both the mind and body simultaneously, you can rebuild the mind-body connection and create a stronger foundation for lifelong recovery.

Everything we do at Tree House Recovery aims to heal the mind and body together. Our Embodied Presence (EP) uses yoga for recovery and teaches clients to release negative thoughts through physical activity. With a conscious, mindful approach to the physical aspects of yoga practice, the body’s movements can be connected to mental exercises for a complete healing experience.

Everything we do at Tree House Recovery aims to heal the mind and body together. Our Embodied Presence (EP) Yoga Therapy program is one of the most effective approaches. Yoga allows clients to release negative thoughts through physical activity; with a conscious, mindful approach to the physical aspects of yoga practice, the body’s movements can be connected to mental exercises for a complete healing experience.

What is Embodied Presence (EP) Therapy?

In the Western world, we typically associate yoga with physical exercise. But when yoga originated thousands of years ago in India, it was primarily a spiritual practice that was intended to be meditative. But as yoga made its way into Europe and the United States, its medical benefits were quickly established for both physical and mental healing. In the 1980s, yoga therapy became a recognized modality that improved the lives of many patients as they healed their bodies through the physical challenges of yoga, and healed their minds through the cognitive requirements of intentional yoga practices.

Embodied Presence Yoga is our method of using yoga for recovery by utilizing mindfulness-based principles. Participants in EP Yoga are guided through a traditional group yoga practice and are also guided through meditation and breathwork exercises that direct their thoughts and intentions during yoga exercises. The goal is to encourage presence and purpose, attuning the mind to the body by connecting deeper emotions to the physical experience of yoga poses. EP Yoga helps practitioners develop trust in their bodies and their personal strength again: just as they work through physically stressful poses on the mat, they are equipped to work through mentally stressful situations off of it.

EP Yoga may also be informed by trauma — it can help heal trauma-induced thought patterns and behaviors by reestablishing participants’ autonomy and confidence. Yoga creates a safe, contained space for physical and mental release. EP Yoga also uses interoception (feeling one’s body internally) and independent choice (through intentional body movements) so that clients can concretely feel and strengthen the link between their mind and body, taking back control from trauma and/or addiction.

Our EP Yoga Therapy program results in:

  • Reduced stress, anxiety and depression
  • Increased sense of physical and mental well-being
  • Improved concentration and attention span
  • Mindfulness and mindful awareness
  • Increased GABA production in the brain (produces feelings of happiness and reward)

EP Yoga for Recovery at Tree House

At Tree House Recovery in Portland, Oregon, our EP Yoga modality sessions are guided by our specialized yoga counselor. Colton is a CCAPP-certified Registered Addiction and Drug Technician. He carefully coaches every client to ensure that they are getting the most out of their practice and taking the steps they need to succeed in treatment and in their new, sober life.

Tree House Recovery’s EP Yoga program emphasizes mindful presence and conscious embodiment. We believe that the more people can be present within themselves, the more they can also be present for others. Presence is the key to self-control and intentional actions, which are in turn the key to living the life you want. In discovering their ability to live with purpose, they learn that they can positively affect their lives in ways that not only keep them sober, but allow them to live more fully and more authentically — with themselves, with the people they love and in their community.
