About TRICARE:

Tricare is a healthcare insurance policy provided by the United States Federal government. In exchange for an individual’s service to their country, they and their families receive more affordable healthcare from a wide variety of providers throughout the country. This includes rehab for substance abuse.

What Will Tricare Cover?

Tricare covers both emergency and non emergency care for members struggling with Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD). If you do not pose a danger to yourself or others you can still get approved for higher levels of care — especially if you need to detox or stabilize.

Non-Emergency Inpatient Care May Be Approved If You:
  • Relapse
  • Need Detox
  • Can’t function or perform your duties with only Outpatient care
Emergency Inpatient Coverage:

TRICARE will cover any level of care that is medically necessary for your recovery. This includes inpatient services for:

  • Detox
  • Medical complications caused by Substance Abuse Disorder.

What Addiction Treatment Does TRICARE Cover?

TRICARE plans may cover all or part of treatment for substance abuse that includes:

  • Alcohol
  • Prescription opioids like Vicodin, Oxycontin, or Percocet
  • Heroin
  • Benzodiazepines like Xanax or Valium
  • Cocaine
  • Stimulants like Adderall or Meth
  • Marijuana

Does TRICARE Cover Residential Treatment?

If your addiction stops you from normal functioning, you can’t function at an outpatient level of care and need 24-hour supervision, TRICARE may approve your residential care. Residential treatment can sometimes be part of the treatment plan. It sometimes is the second step right after you go through detox and may depend on the extent of use and level of structure and supervision deemed necessary. You are not expected to know the level of care you need. We can guide you through the confidential assessment so you can get the help you need.

Types of Rehab Tricare May Cover

Tricare policies may offer coverage for several different kinds of rehab, ranging from high to low levels of care.

  • Detox: The process of letting all narcotics leave the body so that recovery can begin. It provides 24-hours of medically supervised care and is the most comfortable way to get off opioids and the safest way to quit alcohol or benzodiazepines like Xanax or Valium.
  • Partial Hospitalization (PHP) is usually a step down from Inpatient care, but at Tree House Recovery our PHP program has 5-6 hours of treatment for 5 days a week including:
    • Regimented daily exercise
    • 1 on 1 therapy
    • Writing therapy to deal with past trauma or possible causes for addiction.
    •  to improve brain function and reduce cravings
    • Group counseling for support resources and community activities
    • Events like Spartan races, mud runs, and other challenges to see how emotionally and physically strong you've become.
    • Team-building exercises that help develop lifelong bonds and sober friendships.
  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP): Our IOP program is 3-5 hours a day for 5 days a week and begins after completing PHP.
  • Standard Outpatient: Outpatient care (sometimes called aftercare) includes 1 on 1 therapy for 3 hours per week -- or 1 hour per day, 3 nights a week.

Cost of Rehab with Tricare:

There are several kinds of Tricare insurance. Depending on which one you have, many or all of the costs for substance abuse treatment at Tree House Recovery could be covered as long as certain steps are followed.

  • If you have Tricare Prime then most or even all costs for substance abuse treatment could be covered if your Primary Care Manager (PCM) assigned by the military network “refers you to specialists for care he or she can’t provide” [1]. This is true whether the provider is in your Tricare network or not.
  • If you have Tricare Select, you may need authorization from your Tricare Regional Operator to get treatment. Getting authorization means that your Tricare Select plan will likely provide more coverage for your treatment as long as your needs meet certain criteria.
  • If you have Tricare Retired Reserve or Tricare Reserve Select, you do not need a referral or authorization to get treatment for substance abuse. However, costs might be higher if you choose an out of network provider.
  • If you have Tricare Young Adult, your benefits depend on whether your eligible family member has the Tricare Prime or Tricare Select option.

Do Treatment Centers Need to Be In-Network?

Some TRICARE plans, such as TRICARE Reserve Select, TRICARE Young Adult, and TRICARE Prime Remote, can opt to receive treatment from an out-of-network provider, but the costs are higher than using an in-network provider. Other plans require you use an in-network provider. An in-network provider with TRICARE can offer you the least expensive coverage as the rates negotiated between a provider and the insurance plan are usually the best possible value. Also keep in mind that some providers will require payment up front for the entire cost of treatment and you may have to wait several weeks for TRICARE to reimburse you. This cost could range anywhere from hundreds of dollars for outpatient treatment to thousands of dollars for inpatient treatment.

Out-Of-Network vs In-Network Addiction Treatment

Beneficiaries can always choose TRICARE network providers. However, you may prefer to go to a center that is out-of-network. Fortunately, with TRICARE, you may find the provider that you want in their list non-network providers. You may receive higher out-of-pocket costs with a non-network provider, but that may not always be the case. Every situation is different.
