Doug Derham
Writing Therapist | Portland, OR
Doug Derham is a Writing Therapist and Tree House Recovery PDX graduate who brings firsthand experience and empathy to his counseling work. He specializes in helping clients use writing as a safe and powerful tool for processing difficult experiences and emotions.
Doug’s approach is rooted in the belief that addiction is a complex condition, not a moral failing. He combines group sessions, one-on-one therapy, and real-world activities to help clients build resilience, coping skills, and self-understanding. Certified as a CADC-R and working toward his CADC-I and CrossFit Level 1 Training Certification, Doug values the role of physical health in recovery.
Certifications:
- Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor-Registered (CADC-R)
- Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) – In Training
- Cross-fit Level 1 Certification
Inspired by the resilience of those he works with, Doug finds the most significant reward in helping clients rediscover their strength. He encourages families and individuals to “never underestimate what someone is capable of, or the depths they can pull themselves out of.”
Outside of Tree House, Doug is an avid athlete and movie enthusiast. He is training for endurance bicycle races and pursuing advanced addiction counseling and social work education.
