Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) 101

In mental health by Tree House Recovery

Neuro-linguistic Programming, or NLP, is all about delving into the connections between human behavior and the mind. NLP seeks to understand human behavior and communication at conscious and subconscious levels. Developed in California in the 1970s, the underlying principle of NLP is that our reality is based on our individual perception, or what is called our maps. Everyone has a different map or path that led them to the present moment. By getting to know our maps and tracing our experiences backward in time, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and develop a plan for the future. NLP can seem complicated at first, but it’s actually quite simple. It’s a system for helping us define our outlook on the world.

Techniques

There are many techniques used in NLP for greater emotional awareness, freedom, and achievement of goals. Some common practices are dissociation, rapport, anchoring yourself, and content reframing. All of these techniques involve drawing new connections between your experiences and your responses, ultimately serving to create greater freedom.

Benefits of NLP

NLP techniques allow you to take action to achieve your goals, cultivate greater self-awareness, figure out and define exactly what your goals are, and adapt your plan as necessary. Ultimately, NLP can help us reprogram our brains so that we react in healthier and more sustainable ways. Reduced stress, improved communication, improved management of emotional states, and increased confidence are a few of the major benefits of cultivating an NLP practice.

NLP and Recovery

NLP can be an empowering tool during recovery, as it can help you gain insight into what you want and develop a clear map towards achievement. Additionally, NLP can help you learn to break down your overwhelming emotions into more understandable parts, making changes in small and incremental steps.
