Having A Sober Superbowl

In Relapse Prevention, Sober Living by Tree House Recovery

The Super Bowl is just a few weeks away, and, as per normal, it’s sure to be rife with revelry, partying, and folks having a good time. Fortunately for those of us in recovery, we, too, can enjoy the game with friends and family without having to pick up a drink. After all, the Super Bowl’s a lot more fun when we’re not depending on substances to make it entertaining.

One of the best ways to enjoy a sober Super Bowl is to stay in, if you’re so inclined. Many, many, many people stay in and watch the game in the comfort of their own homes every year, and it’s a great way to ensure that you keep alcohol as far away from you as possible. Making some homemade snacks and settling down in your favorite easy chair to boo the opposing team and pick at the commercials is a pretty great way to have fun and stay sober.

For those who still want to party during the Super Bowl, there’s no shame in that. A great way to enjoy a Super Bowl party and stay away from the booze yourself is to offer to help set up, serve, or host an event like trivia during the big game. This keeps your mind off of alcohol, and focuses your attention on a task that will keep you occupied for a good portion of the night.

If you’re up for it and don’t feel like serving, enjoy a mocktail at the game, instead of a cocktail. If you’re hosting at your place, set up a station for those that don’t drink, and prepare some beverages that are sweet, sour, tart, or whatever you prefer– just make sure you don’t even bring the alcohol out. If you’re going elsewhere for the party, take your own mocktail– even if it’s something as simple as a Sprite with grenadine.

Finally, if you’re out at a party and the above options aren’t available, you can always grab a comfy seat on the sofa and take in the Super Bowl for what it is– a great football game between two of the best teams in the league. Pick out your favorite commercials, catch up with friends, and have a good laugh at the halftime show. If the drinking all around you gets to be a little much, you can make your exit whenever you want. After all, you can always watch the same game at home!
