Suicide among veterans is a serious issue with alarmingly high rates compared to the general population. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), an average of 17 veterans died by suicide every day in 2019, resulting in a suicide rate of approximately 17.3 per 100,000 veterans – 1.5 times higher than non-veteran adults (1). The risk factors for suicide among veterans include mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance abuse. Easy access to firearms has also been identified as a significant risk factor.
To combat this crisis, the VA has established several suicide prevention programs, including the Veterans Crisis Line, which provides 24/7 support to veterans in crisis, and a suicide prevention website that provides resources and information for veterans and their families. Veterans organizations and advocacy groups also have programs and initiatives aimed at reducing suicide rates among veterans.
If you or a veteran you know is struggling with mental health issues or suicidal thoughts, don’t wait to seek help. The Veterans Crisis Line is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255 (Press 1), or you can text 838255. If you’re experiencing an immediate emergency, call 911. The VA’s suicide prevention website also offers additional resources and information.
By raising awareness of the issue, providing support for those who have served our country, and taking action to reduce the number of veteran suicides, we can all make a difference. If you want to learning more about how to help prevent veteran suicide, please refer to the cited sources below.
