OCTOBER IN PORTLAND: FUN, SOBER EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS AROUND TOWN

In Sober Living by Tree House Recovery

Enjoy the arrival of fall with these sober activities this month!

Fall is in session and October is generally full of mid-season fantasy football meltdowns (for some of us), falling leaves, and of course, Halloween. It’s that time where the holidays are about to get into full swing. With the holidays, comes the family and social events that sometimes trip us up. But because Portland has so much to do, you’re not going to be starved for sober events this month, from vegan food festivals to murder mysteries. Let’s check some out.

PACIFIC TRIKEFEST

Feel like a kid again while supporting mobility research! Portland is the scene for Pacific TrikeFest on Saturday, October 5th, 2019. You might have thought that trikes were just for toddlers, but you’ve never seen trikes like these. Custom-built for adults, these sturdy recumbent trikes are a blast to ride. Best of all, attendees will get to test over 50 demo trikes and review them for a great cause. From the TrikeFest website: “Trikes are stable on three wheels and fun to ride. With their comfortable padded seats you enjoy the whole day on wheels! Trikes are also the perfect ride for folks with neuromuscular limitations such as Parkinson’s, Stroke, MS as well as for those recovering from knee, hip or spinal surgery.” Check out the full details at recumbentpdx.com/pacifictrikefest.

15th ANNUAL PORTLAND VEGFEST

For the 15th year, VegFest promises to be an immersive, two-day experience for attendees to enjoy amazing vegan dishes, learn about vegetarian and vegan cooking, attend wellness seminars, and see exclusive documentaries aimed at bettering ourselves—and our world—through what we eat. Festivities begin at the Convention Center Saturday, October 5-Sunday, October 6. Full program details can be found at nwveg.org/vegfest-program-2019.

PORTLAND RETRO GAMING EXPO 2019

If you like your video games old school, the Retro Gaming Expo is where you should be October 18-20 at the Convention Center. Brought to you by Retro Gaming Expo, Inc.—a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and educating the public on the importance of classic games to popular culture. Enjoy tournaments, gaming panels, cosplay and more. Check out more at retrogamingexpo.com.

DINNER DETECTIVE: INTERACTIVE MURDER MYSTERY SHOW

Looking for an interesting sober date night? Have a dinner out and help solve a murder at the same time with some of Portland’s best comic actors on Saturday, October 12. While dinner is prepared and served, you’ll get the chance to participate in solving the crime, and have everything wrapped up by dessert—just like on TV, but seriously funny. Select your menu and get your tickets here: Dinner Detective

PORTLAND FILM FESTIVAL

Film buffs won’t want to miss this annual celebration of film as an artform and a learning tool, as the Portland Film Festival runs from October 14-20. With an emphasis on the artistry and ideas behind the films presented, the Portland Film Festival is “a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing filmmakers and audiences, and to celebrating the power of a good story.” A full program of features, information, and ticket packages can be found at portlandfilmfestival.com.
