The Fight of Our Lives

The Fight of Our Lives

In Addiction, Recovery by Tree House Recovery

Everyday we wake up on this side of the ground, we have one more chance to win– and in addiction treatment, small wins everyday are the key to huge gains both mentally and physically down the road.

Think about it: how many of us really want to wake up everyday, just to exist? When we were addicted, some days may have felt like that was all we were doing– existing. That’s why in treatment here at Tree House Recovery, we champion working hard, building bonds, and taking bold steps forward. Because life isn’t meant for us to just live it. It’s meant for us to live it to the fullest.

Fighting against addiction is the biggest fight we’ll face in our lives, and we need to be prepared for it. Here, in treatment, we prepare ourselves by pushing our minds and bodies to the limit each and everyday, and building our strength, independence and confidence while we do it. Five days a week, we hit the weights, and we hit them hard. When we’re not lifting, we’re going MMA-style on the mats with our brothers. We’re learning that sometimes the best way to get rid of pain is to punch it out, lift it out, sweat it out, and grunt it out. When our bodies are exhausted, we switch to training our minds. Process groups, as we call them, allow us to get the therapy we need in an environment that’s collaborative and helpful. We talk about things openly and candidly with our brothers, and in doing so, we slowly switch from an isolationist mentality to a desire to be present and supportive with one another.

For those issues we need to talk about privately, we make good use of one on one therapy space. After all, reconnecting with ourselves in our own space is just as important as being present with everyone else. While it’s great to be able to learn new ways to treat addiction in a group setting, building the confidence that we have what it takes to beat addiction is also an individual task. Learning that we’re strong in and of ourselves can give us the strength we need to push on once we graduate and get back out into the real world, and it’s that strength that will make all the difference when life throws us a curveball.

We’re not just training to beat addiction. We’re training to conquer life.
