Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. It is also estimated that 70% of Americans have had a traumatic event in their lives. As we know, traumas can negatively impact us in many ways. Traumas can manifest into physical illness, depression, stress, and even result in self-medicating. Traumas also impact the way we associate with others, result in relationship problems, and effect the way we view ourselves. People with traumas usually suppress the painful memories, not knowing the effect this is having on them.
Studies have shown that simply picking up a pen and paper and writing about these past traumas have beautiful, long-term results. People have fewer illnesses, saw the doctor less than usual, experienced less symptoms of depression, and improved their performance at work and/or school.
Writing about traumas helps us make peace with them and puts the experiences to rest so they do not haunt us any longer. Personally, I have found writing to be one of the most therapeutic parts of my life. Just putting the pen to paper and getting all my thoughts out has helped me gain peace of mind throughout the years. I have written very difficult things down which, after doing so, helped me view them in a more positive light and grow. I have written simple life choices down to see which is my better option.
