The summer is coming to an end. While August is often one of the hottest and sunniest months here in Oregon, it also signals the end of the summer season. The summer season is a time when we’re energized by the light of the sun. In ancient wisdom, it’s considered a yang (or masculine) time, a time when our energy is heightened. We spend time outdoors, hike, and feel renewed by the powerful light of solar energy. Autumn, on the other hand, is a yin (or feminine) time of year, when the leaves begin to fall from the trees and nature starts to change course. This is a simple meditation to bid farewell to the summer and begin the transition into autumn.
Find a comfortable seated position or lie down. Begin to focus on your inhales and your exhales. As thoughts enter your mind, let them pass by without judgment or dwelling.
Imagine all of the plants and abundance that the summer months have brought. Imagine the plants growing and lush greenery all around. Imagine the sun’s energy being filtered into these powerful plants so that they can grow and offer us oxygen and beauty. Allow your body to relax and your mind to picture all of the lush growth of Oregon summer. Let your mind be fully present in the greenery and light of summer. How does it look? Smell? What thoughts come to mind?
Imagine the onset of autumn and the decline of the sun. Notice the leaves falling from the trees and the plant life changing. Know that this is a necessary and beautiful part of life and the cycles of the seasons. Bid farewell to the summer light and surroundings. Inhale the new light of autumn. As the leaves fall from the trees, release what you no longer want to take with you into this new season and give thanks for the abundance that summer brought.
