In Health & Wellness, mental health by Tree House Recovery

There’s nothing like summer in Oregon and the end of summer and beginning of fall offer some of the most abundant foods, many of them locally grown. From berries to melons to cabbage, Oregon’s late summer crops are vibrant and healthy. When we eat wholesome and colorful foods that are grown with love tend to make us feel happier and more in tune with our seasons and bodies. Here are just a few of the many options this summer for mood-boosting seasonal produce right here in Oregon.

Berries. Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are some of the most colorful and antioxidant-rich foods available. They’re also hydrating and filled with essential vitamins and nutrients. They’re in season right now.

Cantaloupes. August-October is Cantaloupe season in the Pacific Northwest and it’s time to load up on these bright and sweet fruits. Cantaloupes are practically synonymous with summer. Enjoy them outside and first thing in the morning! These juicy melons make the best Oregon breakfast.

Greens. Greens are in season through the fall. Whether you like lettuce, kale, or spinach, now’s the time to stock up. Greens contain chlorophyll, which boosts immunity and makes us feel our best.

Figs. July and August are prime fig season in our part of the country. Figs are rich in micronutrients like iron and magnesium.

Eggplant. Stock up on eggplant and make soup or eggplant parmesan. This purple vegetable is good for bones and cognitive function.

Edible flowers. It sounds wild, but edible flowers are good for you and also quite beautiful. Use them as an edible decoration for your summer parties. They’re in season through October.
